Where the 2027 cycle stands in October
Amazon posted its first summer 2027 software engineering internships in July. Microsoft followed in August, Meta in early September. If you are reading this in October and have sent nothing yet, you are late for those three. You are not late for the season.
Google usually opens its SWE intern posting around mid-October and closes it within two to four weeks. Stripe, Palantir, Snowflake and most mid-size companies post between October and December. Startups hire into February. So the honest status is this: one wave has passed, the biggest single window is about to open, and two more waves are behind it.
Below is the calendar by month, what each company pays per hour according to public trackers, and a plan for the next 30 days. The calendar marks where today falls, so you do not have to work that out.
The 2027 calendar, month by month
Dates are when postings have opened in recent cycles. Companies move them by a few weeks every year, so treat a month as "check the careers page every few days", not as a promise.
-
Jul – Aug 2026
First wave
Amazon, Databricks, NVIDIA, then Microsoft in mid-August. Amazon alone took about 11,000 SWE interns in the 2026 cycle, so its online assessment invites arrive in batches for months.
-
Sep 2026
Meta, Apple, the career fairs
Meta opens early in the month. Apple posts team by team from September to November. University fairs run now; a recruiter's name from a fair is worth more than the free T-shirt.
-
Oct 2026
Google's short window
Mid-October, open for two to four weeks. Have the resume final before it opens: editing it while the posting is live costs you the days that matter most. Stripe, Uber and Airbnb are also usually live by now.
-
Nov – Dec 2026
Mid-size and late big tech
Salesforce, Snowflake, Adobe, LinkedIn, Spotify. Online assessments from the September applications land now, often with a 7-day deadline. Block evenings for them.
-
Jan – Feb 2027
Startups and second chances
Series A to C startups post when they know their summer budget. Spotify's hard deadline has been in February. Reneged offers reopen a few big-tech slots too.
-
Mar – May 2027
Last calls
Small companies, research labs, university projects. Thin, but real. If you have nothing by March, an open-source contribution with a merged PR is the best summer substitute.
What the big names pay per hour
These are figures Extern compiled from public offer data for the 2027 cycle. The US national average for interns across all fields is around $23 an hour, which tells you how far the top of this table is from normal.
| Company | Opens (recent cycles) | Hourly | Housing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-Oct, 2–4 weeks | ~$72 | ~$3,000 / month | |
| Netflix | Aug – Nov | ~$63 | varies |
| Roblox | Aug – Oct | $60–64 | varies |
| Amazon | Jul – Aug | ~$57 | stipend |
| Meta | Early Sep | ~$57 | stipend |
| Microsoft | Mid-Aug | $52.50 | $3,333 / month |
One opinion, since you will see these numbers everywhere: do not rank applications by the hourly column. The team you land on decides whether you get a return offer. The gap between $57 and $72 an hour over a 12-week summer is about $7,200 before tax; a full-time offer at the end is worth far more than that.
Where to apply, beyond the careers pages
Company careers pages are the source of truth, but nobody can refresh forty of them daily. Three places do the watching for you.
- The SimplifyJobs Summer 2027 list on GitHub. A community-maintained table of open internships with dates added. Watch the repository and GitHub emails you when it changes.
- Your university's career portal. Smaller companies post only there because they want students from your school specifically. Fewer applicants per role than anywhere else.
- Job boards with an internship filter. The vacancies section on IT Career Gym lists open tech roles; filter by level to see junior and intern posts.
Outside the US, the same companies' offices in London, Dublin, Zurich and Warsaw run a similar autumn calendar. Check visa sponsorship in the posting before you write a cover letter: for internships it is the exception.
Is your application ready for the Google window?
Tick what is true today. The box below tells you which gap to close first and where to do it.
Starting in October: a 30-day plan
Here is what I would do with one month and no applications sent. It assumes about ten hours a week.
Days 1–4: resume, final version
One page. Two projects with numbers. Ask one engineer to read it for 90 seconds and tell you what they remember. If it is not the project you care about, reorder.
Days 5–10: send the first 20
Ten big-tech postings that are still open, ten mid-size companies. Referrals where you have a real connection. Note the date of each in a spreadsheet.
Days 5–30: one OA pattern a day
Arrays, hashing, two pointers, BFS, sliding window. Twenty minutes a day on daily challenges beats a Sunday marathon.
Day 14: first mock phone screen
The first interview you ever give should not be at Google. Do it on a pair mock with someone at your level, then swap roles.
Day 30: check your rate
If fewer than 2 of 40 applications have produced an assessment, the resume is the problem, not the volume. Rewrite before you send more.
The short version
The July wave is gone. Google's two-to-four-week window is the next big date, and mid-size companies keep posting until December. Apply early inside each window, because almost every company reviews on a rolling basis. Practise the assessment pattern daily and the phone screen at least twice before it counts.

Questions readers ask
-
Is it too late to apply for summer 2027 in October?
No. Big tech is mid-cycle, Google opens around now, and mid-size companies and startups keep posting until February. You lose some early slots, not the season.

How many applications is normal?
Nobody publishes a real figure. Track your own rate instead: if fewer than 2 of your first 40 applications turn into an online assessment, fix the resume before you send application 41.

Do I need a referral?
It helps you skip the resume pile, not the online assessment. A referral from someone who actually worked with you counts more than a cold one.

I am outside the US. Does this calendar apply?
London, Dublin, Zurich and Warsaw offices of the same companies run on a similar autumn cycle. Visa sponsorship for internships is rarer; check each posting before you spend an evening on it.

What should my resume show with no work experience?
Two projects with numbers: users, latency, test coverage, anything measurable. Coursework goes last. A link to the code matters more than the design.

Can IT Career Gym help me get an internship?
We do not place interns. You can practise the online assessment topics on quizzes, rehearse the phone screen on a pair mock and browse open roles in the vacancies section.
